UNESCO has announced the discovery of three new shipwrecks, including two that are thousands of years old. However, there are plenty of submerged treasures that remain undiscovered, with an estimate from UNESCO suggesting that there are over three million wrecks resting undiscovered in the world’s oceans. The wrecks that have been documented are thought to represent a small fraction of the total number of wrecks. These relics may also contain mind-boggling riches, which can present problems surrounding ownership and the potential for looting. With modern submersibles and new sonar technologies, finding deep shipwrecks has never been easier.
