How Pi Almost Wasn’t

Every March 14th, Pi Day is celebrated in honor of the magical number π = 3.14… that transcends universes. Despite this, why is 3.14… considered more fundamental than 1.57… or other pi-related quantities? Archimedes was the first to estimate pi, leading to the acknowledgments of pi as a number. But was 3.14… really the right number? Should we have adopted 6.28… instead? Euler and others argued for different ratios, sparking a debate that continues to this day. Tau Day celebrates 6.28…, suggesting that math might be simpler if we started with 2π. The battle between pi and tau rages on, with both sides making valid arguments.
