How to make fancy road trip maps with R and OpenStreetMap

The author is excited about their upcoming road trip from Atlanta, Georgia to Spanish Fork, Utah and has planned an adventurous route through many exciting destinations. To keep their family entertained, they have created road trip journals and additional materials about each of the stops. In order to make maps for their journals, they explore different options for geocoding and routing data, ultimately settling on the Open Source Routing Machine (OSRM) project, which allows them to pull geocoded routing and directions data into R in an open source and free way. They provide helpful functions and code for others looking to do similar mapping projects.
