Humming-Birds

This website is a faithful reproduction and restoration of John Gould’s A Monograph of the Trochilidæ, or Family of Humming-Birds, an impressive work of ornithological art and science. Originally published in six volumes between 1848 and 1887, the Monograph depicts and describes all known species of hummingbirds at the time. It consists of five volumes, each containing 360 beautifully hand-colored lithographic plates. In addition, a supplementary volume by R. B. Sharpe was published after Gould’s death, adding 58 more plates and descriptions. The website presents posters showcasing 422 hummingbird species with their names for easy identification. The meticulous arrangement of these illustrations was done by hand, resulting in a stunning display.
