I 3D scanned the tunnels inside the Maya Pyramid Temples at Copan

Archaeologists have been exploring the Copan acropolis since the 1930s, revealing a 4-kilometer tunnel system containing early stelae, tombs, and plaster facades. A Harvard-led conservation effort, in partnership with the Instituto Hondureño de Antropología e Historia, has created a digital 3D model of the tunnels to preserve the historical site. The project addresses challenges like the humid climate, water table fluctuations, visitor access, and collapse risks. This groundbreaking work sheds light on the acropolis’s history and construction phases, offering valuable insights into the ancient Mayan civilization.
