Big Tech is facing an ethics crisis, as concerns over surveillance, unethical business models, societal polarization, and power imbalances have escalated. The ACM’s Code of Ethics outlines the importance of supporting the public good in computing. However, the question remains: is it ethical to work for Big Tech? The answer is not straightforward, as seen in the case of Uber and its questionable practices. Many Big Tech workers may not be asking themselves the hard questions necessary to address this crisis. The need for ethical computing technologists and a focus on the public good is crucial in navigating this complex ethical landscape.
