Low-code development is a concept that promises fast development and low maintenance costs. However, as a software consultant, I have witnessed clients becoming unhappy with low-code solutions due to their inability to handle truly custom functionality. While these tools may cover about 80% of a company’s requirements, the remaining 20% often requires significant customization that the tool cannot easily accommodate. This leads companies to choose between settling for partial functionality or attempting to hack the tool to fit their exact needs. Unfortunately, this results in custom code that only a few individuals understand, making it difficult to find qualified maintainers and causing issues with upgrades. Additionally, the underlying database structure can become messy and inscrutable, making precise analytics of the data challenging. Therefore, while low-code tools may work well in certain cases, it is crucial to approach them with skepticism and carefully consider their limitations.
