Intel’s Ponte Vecchio: Chiplets Gone Crazy

Intel’s Ponte Vecchio (PVC) is a unique addition to the world of discrete graphics cards. Unlike other GPUs, PVC lacks fixed function graphics hardware and display outputs, making it more of a parallel processor than a traditional GPU. PVC’s physical design is also distinctive, as it utilizes chiplets and advanced packaging techniques to combine different process nodes in the same package. However, PVC does face challenges, such as high latency in its L2 cache and slower global memory access. While PVC performs well in some benchmarks, it falls short against recent datacenter GPUs that specialize in FP64 operations. Overall, PVC showcases Intel’s ambition to create a special compute-oriented GPU.
