Internet Archive responds to recording industry lawsuit targeting obsolete media

Late Friday, major record labels like Sony and Universal Music Group filed a lawsuit against the Internet Archive and others over the Great 78 Project. This project aims to preserve and uncover 70 to 120-year-old 78 rpm records through a non-profit library. The Internet Archive takes this matter seriously and is currently reviewing the lawsuit with legal counsel. The Great 78 Project has been operating since 2006, bringing free public access to a culturally significant but often forgotten medium. The preservation efforts have resulted in hundreds of thousands of recordings preserved on shellac resin, maintaining the authentic scratch and pop sounds of the analog artifacts. Despite being used for teaching and research, access to these recordings is relatively low. While the Internet Archive reviews the lawsuit, they remain committed to their mission of providing universal access to knowledge.
