Interoperability Can Save the Open Web

In his new book, “The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation,” author Cory Doctorow argues for the disruption of Big Tech and proposes interoperability as the solution to break down their dominance. Doctorow believes that these tech giants are kept in power not by their engineering prowess, but by legal structures. Interoperability, the ability for platforms to interact with each other, would make the internet more open and democratic. Through the use of real-world examples, Doctorow highlights the importance of interoperability and its potential to break up monopolies. He also discusses the need for laws that promote true interoperability without creating barriers or advantages for specific companies. Doctorow hopes that by starting with tech, the momentum and political will to challenge other sectors will be gained.
