Japanese biomass venture using microorganisms to tackle waste disposal

Japanese startup Komham Inc. has developed a technology that uses microorganisms to decompose organic waste, making it accessible for people to contribute to environmental protection. The company, based in Sapporo, supplies bacteria that can convert 98% of organic waste into water and carbon dioxide in just 24 hours, eliminating the need for composting. Komham’s smartcompost boxes, to be powered by solar energy, will be released next year and placed around cities, as well as in schools, high-rise condominiums and at camping sites. The boxes can be monitored by owners to track the waste decomposition process in an attempt to reduce food waste.
