Japanese police arrest man for tampering with Pokémon Violet save data

A 36-year-old man in Japan has been arrested for selling illegally modified Pokémon save data, violating the country’s Unfair Competition Prevention Act. The suspect admitted to tampering with Pokémon move sets and selling the data for up to $84 a time between December 2022 and March 2023. He faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine of over $32,600. This incident is not the first of its kind, as criminals have previously attempted to profit off the popular franchise through thefts and scams. The impact of Pokémon craze even led to the firing of two police officers in Los Angeles for prioritizing a Pokemon Go pursuit over attending a burglary call.
