Japan’s push to make all research open access

The Japanese government has announced plans to make all publicly funded research accessible through institutional repositories, with universities receiving funds from the science ministry to build the necessary infrastructure. This move is expected to enhance research traceability, facilitate collaboration, and promote secondary research. Japan is one of the first Asian countries to make significant strides in open access (OA) research, following in the footsteps of the influential Plan S. The focus will be on ‘green OA’, making author-accepted versions of papers available digitally. This initiative is seen as equitable and unified, helping Japan move towards improving its international research ranking.
