A Judas goat is a specially trained goat that assists in herding animals. These goats are trained to lead sheep or cattle to specific locations, often to their slaughter, while the Judas goat itself is spared. Although they have become less commonly used, they can still be found in smaller slaughterhouses and conservation projects around the world. The term “Judas goat” comes from the biblical character Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. In addition to herding sheep and cattle, Judas goats have also been used to locate and exterminate feral goats, aiding in conservation efforts on islands like the Galápagos. These goats are sterilized, equipped with transmitters, and released to lead hunters to the remaining feral goats. The technique has also been used to target other invasive species in different regions. Notably, the Galápagos Islands’ Project Isabela successfully eradicated approximately 140,000 feral goats threatening the local ecosystem.
