Karl Guttag on Apple Vision Pro (Part 1)

The Apple Vision Pro (AVP) has been subject to many reviews, mostly by those with little technical knowledge or expertise in virtual and augmented reality. While many people discussed the uncanny valley and face capture with the Eyesight Display, nobody mentioned the issues of variable focusing and Vegence Accommodation Conflict (VAC). The AVP uses a computer-level CPU+GPU and a custom-designed R1 “vision processor,” whereas the Meta Quest Pro (MQP) uses high-end smartphone processors. The AVP uses a Micro-OLED and a much more efficient optical design, resulting in the OLED consuming less than 1W per eye, less than the MQP when considering all factors.
