Kata Containers is an open source community dedicated to creating a secure container runtime that combines the benefits of lightweight virtual machines with the familiarity and efficiency of containers. Their goal is to provide enhanced workload isolation through hardware virtualization technology as an added layer of defense. Since its launch in December 2017, the community has successfully integrated the best features of Intel Clear Containers and Hyper.sh RunV, and has expanded support to include various architectures such as AMD64, ARM, IBM p-series, IBM z-series, and x86_64. Moreover, Kata Containers works seamlessly with multiple hypervisors like QEMU, Cloud-Hypervisor, and Firecracker, and has integration with the containerd project. The Open Infrastructure Foundation oversees the stewardship of Kata Containers and supports the development and adoption of open infrastructure worldwide. The code for Kata Containers can be found on GitHub and is licensed under Apache 2.
