Sen. John Kennedy and Sen. Jeff Merkley have introduced the Traveler Privacy Protection Act of 2023 to block the use of facial recognition technology by the TSA at airports. The bill aims to stop the government from storing travelers’ biodata and infringing on their privacy. Kennedy believes the TSA program is a step towards a national surveillance state and needs to be stopped. The proposed legislation would require explicit congressional approval for the TSA to use facial recognition, ban the expansion of the current program, and ensure travelers are aware of their right to opt out. Other senators, including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, have also supported the bill.
