Kenneth Anger Has Died

Kenneth Anger, the visionary filmmaker, artist, and author, has died at the age of 96. Known as the Magus of American Cinema, Anger’s kaleidoscopic films laid the groundwork for the avant-garde art scenes of the later twentieth century and influenced the visual languages of contemporary queer and youth culture. His works explored occultism, transgression, and sexuality and were characterized by a mystical-symbolic visual language and phantasmagorical-sensual opulence. Anger’s experimental montage technique eschewed spoken dialogue in favor of suggestion, while his perfectionism saw him handle all aspects of filmmaking himself from the very beginning.
