Kylie Minogue song about a typeface

New York-based writer Whitney Mallett explores the unique history of Towa Tei’s 1997 track “GBI (German Bold Italic)”, in which Kylie Minogue sings from the perspective of a typeface. Tei collaborated with artist Hiro Sugiyama to create the high-impact techno font accompanying the release as a data track. The song, sung by one of the biggest pop stars of the time, brought forward a fusion of minimalist beats and futuristic vocals. Despite being underappreciated, the font gained notoriety when artist Cory Arcangel used it for merch design in 2015, emphasizing its rare and classic techno style.
