By the afternoon of Dec. 13, 2022, winter had finally arrived in Nome, Alaska. The town, famous for its Iditarod sled dog race, was covered in a fresh blanket of snow. Curtis Worland, a musher and court services officer, took a break from work to visit his kennel. Worland had been dealing with an increasing musk oxen problem in Nome, as the animals would often approach the kennel and attack the sled dogs. On that fateful day, Worland was trying to scare off a herd of musk oxen when one of them charged at him and fatally wounded him. This incident triggered a discussion among Nome residents regarding the mismanagement of musk oxen and the lack of protection for locals.
