LG and Samsung are making TV screens disappear

Television giants LG and Samsung showcased see-through displays at CES 2024, capturing spectators’ attention with the magic-like technology. LG relies on OLED displays, while Samsung favors microLED screens to achieve transparency, although neither is quite ready for everyday use. LG’s transparent OLED utilizes carbon-based compounds to emit light, with materials carefully chosen for transparency. Meanwhile, Samsung’s microLED approach features inorganic LEDs in tiny pixels for high transparency. The futuristic technology is ideal for signage and public displays, with potential use in machinery and car windshields. However, the sky-high prices and practical applications of transparent displays raise questions about their mainstream adoption.
