A study from the University of South Australia reveals the importance of a magnesium-rich diet in reducing the risk of DNA damage and chronic diseases. Low magnesium levels lead to high levels of the genotoxic amino acid homocysteine, which can damage genes and increase susceptibility to various disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, and diabetes. Eating whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, and dark chocolate can help maintain proper magnesium levels. The study highlights the need for further research on the optimal dietary intake of magnesium to prevent disease onset and progression, published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
