Managing Kitchen Fruit Flies with a Little Shop of Horrors

Living in Seattle, the author constantly dealt with fruit flies in their kitchen. Despite regular cleaning, the fruit flies would build up over time, requiring traps to catch them. However, the author discovered a more effective solution: carnivorous pitcher plants. Specifically, they purchased three pitcher plants, including a Purple Pitcher Plant which proved to be the most successful in catching fruit flies. By continuously removing fruit flies early on, they prevent exponential growth and keep them under control. Additionally, the author found that fruit flies dislike the smell of lavender, so they added lavender essential oil to their compost bin to deter the flies. Care tips for the pitcher plants are also provided.
