Mazda’s rotary engine in the age of the electric car

Mazda recently reintroduced the Wankel rotary engine in their MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV model after a decade-long hiatus from the technology. The unique feature of the MX-30 R-EV is its use of the rotary engine to power a generator, which then supplies electricity to an electric motor, creating a series plug-in hybrid configuration. Mazda overcame technical challenges with the rotary engine, such as chatter marks, by utilizing innovative materials and lubrication techniques. Despite the improved efficiency and environmental performance of the redesigned rotary engine, the MX-30 R-EV falls short in fuel economy compared to other vehicles on the market. Mazda’s commitment to the rotary engine is evident in their efforts to keep the technology current and marketable, as it is a core part of their identity.
