Over 140 Facebook content moderators in Kenya have been diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety, and depression from exposure to graphic images like murders and child abuse while working for Meta. The moderators, who were paid significantly less than their US counterparts, experienced severe mental health issues and resorted to alcohol and drugs. They feared for their safety, suffered trypophobia, and faced marriage breakdowns. The lawsuit against Meta and Samasource Kenya sheds light on the toll of social media moderation work. Despite assurances from Meta about support and training for reviewers, the reality for these moderators was traumatic and damaging.
