My thoughts on Python in Excel

On August 22, 2023, Microsoft introduced “Python in Excel,” aiming to provide an alternative to Excel’s formula language. The integration of Jupyter notebooks cells within the Excel grid has caused issues as it breaks the core spreadsheet concept. While Python in Excel offers some use cases like Monte Carlo simulations and advanced visualizations, it lacks the ability to use custom packages or connect to web APIs. The cloud-based nature of Python in Excel on Azure Container Instances has raised concerns about data privacy and a potential subscription fee. The limitations in accessing external data and interactive data analysis make Python in Excel less suitable for certain tasks. Despite the effort, improving Excel’s native formula language might be a better alternative than incorporating Python.
