Scientists have discovered a new experimental antibiotic called abaucin that is able to kill a dangerous superbug species, Acinetobacter baumannii, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). With a lack of new drugs for decades, bacteria have been becoming harder to treat due to their resistance to existing medication, which has resulted in approximately one million deaths each year from antibiotic-resistant infections. The researchers, from Canada and the US, focused on Acinetobacter because it can infect wounds and cause pneumonia. They trained the AI on thousands of drugs where the chemical structure was known and then tested them on Acinetobacter.
