Non-code contributions are the secret to open source success

Mathematics teacher Sarah Rainsberger stumbled into open source contribution when she started rebuilding her choir’s website. Despite not being a programmer, she chose the new front-end framework Astro to learn JavaScript and web development. As the project grew, Rainsberger found herself contributing a configuration file and became increasingly involved in the community. Today, she is part of Astro’s core maintainer group, focusing on documentation. Non-code contributions are essential to open source projects, including documentation, localization, marketing, design, testing, community management, and release management. Such contributions provide opportunities for individuals to develop technical and non-technical skills and make a meaningful impact in the open source community.
