Norwegian ban on Meta behavioral advertising extended to entire EU

We are delighted that the Data Protection Authority agrees with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority’s assessments and has expanded our ban. The Norwegian Data Protection Authority is extremely concerned about the illegal tracking, monitoring, and profiling that occurs on Facebook and Instagram. Despite it being clear for a long time that Meta is breaking the law, and despite the Norwegian Data Protection Authority’s ban, Meta continues its illegal handling of personal data. This is why we have chosen to bring the issue to the attention of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), which has agreed that there is an urgent need for a permanent ban on these illegal activities at the European level. Facebook and Instagram have over 250 million active users in the EU/EEA. The decision by the Data Protection Board is an instruction to the Irish Data Protection Commission to impose a permanent ban on Meta’s European headquarters in Ireland.
