Researchers have discovered a new class of mysterious genetic material living within the human microbiome, which they have named Obelisks due to their rod-like structure. These Obelisks are different from any other biological agents known, with sequences that have gone unnoticed until now. With almost 30,000 different types identified in published genetic sequences, Obelisks appear in about 10% of human microbiomes. They code for a new class of protein called Oblins, potentially involved in their replication process. While not fully understood, Obelisks are unique entities that may represent an entirely new group bridging the gap between simple genetic molecules and viruses.
