OpenPGP Forked into “LibrePGP” by GnuPG’s Maintainer Werner Koch

A proposed fork of the OpenPGP standard called “LibrePGP” has raised concerns and made statements justifying its existence. While some of the criticisms have merit, most of them are misleading. One major concern raised by LibrePGP is the use of GCM encryption mode, which is difficult to implement correctly. However, GCM is optional and users are not required to implement it if they don’t need it. Another complaint is the removal of certain features and the introduction of new algorithms, but these changes have been addressed in the crypto-refresh draft. Overall, while some concerns are genuine, many are blown out of proportion or personal in nature. The OpenPGP community needs to work together in good faith to move forward and address the challenges it faces.
