Oxide has announced the availability of the world’s first commercial cloud computer, backed by $44M in Series A financing. The company has three core beliefs: cloud computing is the future, the computer that runs the cloud should be purchased and not rented, and cloud computers need a rack-level approach. While the first belief is widely accepted, the second belief is controversial depending on one’s perspective. Oxide aims to address this and has found that more people are realizing the limitations of the rental-only model for cloud computing. The third belief, that cloud computers require a co-design of hardware and software, is not controversial among technologists. Oxide’s cloud computer is unique in its rack-level design, reduced latency, quiet operation, and simplified cabling. The company also developed its own switch and networking software, all of which is included in their cloud computer without additional licensing. The software is open source, providing transparency and avoiding proprietary restrictions.
