Oxidizing Ubuntu: adopting Rust utilities by default

Ubuntu is considering replacing traditional GNU utilities with Rust implementations, such as those from the uutils project, in an effort to modernize the distribution. Canonical’s VP of engineering, Jon Seager, has released oxidizr to allow users to test and provide feedback on the Rust-based utilities ahead of a possible switch in the upcoming Ubuntu releases. While the move has received positive responses from the community, some concerns have been raised about licensing issues and potential impacts on open-source principles. If successful, Ubuntu’s adoption of Rust utilities could pave the way for more widespread use of the language in foundational software.
