During the 18th Century, Guangdong province was the center of trade with the West, leading to a unique blend of Chinese and Western styles in both painting and porcelain decoration. The dialogue between Western merchants and artists resulted in the creation of Export Paintings and Canton Porcelain, which combined these different artistic traditions. Of particular interest are sets of Export Paintings that illustrate traditional Chinese porcelain production techniques, based on illustrations made in the Qianlong reign. These paintings, although flawed and with different titles and characters, provide insight into porcelain production and serve as examples of cross-cultural exchange. The Victoria and Albert Museum showcases a lovely set of Guangzhou Chinese export paintings from this period. However, it is uncertain if the depiction of a porcelain stone mine in one of the paintings is accurate.
