Congress has proposed bills to regulate the internet in the name of protecting children, but simply relying on parental controls is not a viable solution. The current parental controls offered by various platforms are incomplete, buggy, complicated, and invade privacy. This article highlights the shortcomings of Windows 11 Microsoft’s Family Safety tool, MacOS/iOS parental controls, Nintendo Switch parental controls, and router-based filtering. The author argues that if parents want to avoid Congress’ intervention, companies need to fix their parental control systems.
