Prompt is a terminal that combines the best features of GNOME Builder, GNOME Text Editor, and VTE. It can be seen as a companion terminal to Builder and is particularly useful for immutable/container-oriented desktops like Fedora Silverblue or Project Bluefin. Prompt was initially a prototype for GNOME Builder nearly a decade ago, but it was put on hold due to conflicts with VTE on Wayland-based compositors. However, the author has worked with VTE maintainers to improve performance and ported gnome-terminal to GTK 4. Prompt is designed to be Flatpak-first and includes various design choices to enhance performance and energy efficiency. It also offers session support and customizable palettes for added fun. While there are some challenges with container tracking and potential improvements needed, Prompt aims to be a robust and enjoyable terminal experience. The author encourages readers to try it out and consider donating to a pet shelter during the holiday season.
