Quantum Batteries Break Causality

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have made a breakthrough in charging quantum batteries using a novel quantum effect called indefinite causal order (ICO). In the classical world, batteries can only be charged in a specific sequence, limiting the options. However, with ICO, multiple chargers arranged in different orders can exist simultaneously, forming a quantum superposition. This unconventional way of charging quantum batteries results in improved performance, including increased energy storage and thermal efficiency. The researchers also discovered that a lower-power charger can provide higher energies with greater efficiency than a higher-power one. These findings have implications beyond quantum batteries and could potentially improve the performance of other thermodynamic tasks, such as solar panels.
