Users of the website Reddit have protested the platform’s handling of hate speech and misinformation by blacking out a number of popular subreddits. Some users, however, have criticised those involved in the blackout, arguing that their real issue is with administrator Victoria Taylor’s firing, rather than an opposition to hate speech. Nonetheless, others have argued that users have a right to take a stand against bigoted content. The reaction is reminiscent of GamerGate, during which the subculture of gaming and online misogyny were brought into the mainstream.
