Remembering lithium-ion battery pioneer John Goodenough

Nobel Laureate John B. Goodenough, one of the inventors of the lithium-ion battery, passed away at age 100. Goodenough authored over 800 technical papers and was recently granted a U.S. patent shortly before his 100th birthday. He is best known for developing the lithium cobalt oxide cathode, which became the foundation for Sony’s first commercial lithium-ion battery. Goodenough also helped develop three of the most commonly used types of lithium-ion chemistries. He overcame struggles with dyslexia and taught himself to read, eventually becoming a high-achieving student. Goodenough’s contributions have had a significant impact on the development of rechargeable lithium-ion battery technology.
