Researchers accurately dating a 7k-year-old settlement using cosmic rays

Researchers at the University of Bern have successfully dated a prehistoric settlement in Greece over 7,000 years old using cosmic rays. By analyzing wooden building elements and a spike in radiocarbon from the Miyake event of 5259 BC, they were able to establish precise dating for Dispilio. This groundbreaking research marks a paradigm shift in archaeology, as it eliminates the need for continuous regional tree-ring chronologies. The Balkans are the first region to benefit from this dating method, which opens the door to developing a regional dendrochronology for the southern Balkans. The research has been published in Nature Communications.
