Researchers claim first functioning graphene-based chip

Researchers at Georgia Tech have developed a graphene-based semiconductor that could revolutionize the electronics industry. The semiconductor, known as semiconducting epitaxial graphene (SEC), offers enhanced electron mobility and allows for transistors to operate at terahertz frequencies, ten times faster than current silicon-based transistors. The method used to produce SEC involves heating silicon carbide to over 1,000 °C, causing silicon to evaporate and leaving behind a carbon-rich surface that forms into graphene. SEC is charge neutral and can be easily doped with oxygen. The researchers believe that SEC could be used in future quantum computers due to its quantum-mechanical wavelike properties.
