Reverse engineering Ticketmaster’s rotating barcodes

TicketMaster has introduced a new ticketing system called SafeTix that generates rotating barcodes to prevent fraud and scalping. However, these high-tech barcodes have caused headaches for many concertgoers, who struggle with connectivity issues and broken codes at entry gates. Despite TicketMaster’s claims of increased security, the concept of offline tickets seems contradictory, as saving data offline should allow for sharing and selling. By reverse engineering the barcodes, the author uncovers that the system uses Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTPs) for validation, with unique keys for each event and ticket holder. The article highlights the complexities and potential pitfalls of TicketMaster’s ticketing technology.
