Reviving an 800-Year-Old Japanese Tea Farm

In the city of Uji, Kyoto, efforts are being made to revive Asahien, one of the seven famed tea farms of the past, using plants discovered on the grounds of a city temple. A group of locals, led by Matsubayashi Toshiyuki, are working with native Kyoto varieties of tea plants to bring back the flavors of the past. DNA analysis confirmed the special nature of these plants, making them a valuable genetic resource. By growing seedlings and exploring unique cultivation methods, the team aims to honor the legacy of Uji tea and share the ancient wisdom of Zen through tea appreciation.
