In Fall 2020 (or Fall 2022), the pilot course ROB 101 will introduce first-year undergraduate students to the unified world of mathematics and computation, essential for modern engineers. Through linear algebra and Julia programming language, students will engage in practical computational tools and tackle complex problems related to robotics and intelligent systems. The course challenges traditional math education by focusing on relevant engineering applications rather than abstract concepts. With a strong emphasis on collaboration and humility, students will learn the importance of asking for help in the diverse field of robotics. The course, offered in a hybrid mode, emphasizes hands-on projects over traditional exams. Only 30 students will be admitted in this pilot phase, aimed at streamlining preparation for Robotics and AI courses. Linear Algebra is essential for fields like computer vision, machine learning, and autonomy, making ROB 101 a unique and valuable addition to engineering education.
