Scientists unfroze rat organs and transplanted them

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have successfully transplanted a life-sustaining mammalian organ into five rats after re-warming it from an icy metabolic arrest, or vitrification. This is the first time such a transplant has been achieved, with outside experts describing the results as “a seminal milestone for the field of organ preservation”. The technology could potentially save tens of thousands of lives each year in the US alone, by taking the time factor out of organ transplant and preservation. Moreover, it could revolutionise treatment for those experiencing chronic and irreversible renal disease, though independent trials are yet to be conducted.
