Senator calls for the public release of AT&T ‘Hemisphere’ surveillance records

US Senator Ron Wyden is urging US Attorney General Merrick Garland to release more information about the controversial Hemisphere phone surveillance program. The program, which has been in operation since 1987, allows law enforcement agencies access to trillions of domestic phone records collected by AT&T. Wyden has raised concerns about the program, highlighting that it enables “often-warrantless searches” and provides law enforcement agencies with significant amounts of personal data. Additionally, the project has been defunded and refunded multiple times, and its funding bypasses the usual privacy impact assessment process. Wyden believes the public has a right to know about the program and engage in informed discussions about government surveillance.
