In East Germany during the 1980s, Superfest glasses were created with extraordinary durability, resistant to breakage and designed to last five times longer than regular glasses. However, their strength ultimately led to their decline in the market as glass retailers rely on products breaking for profit. Despite being unseen objects in daily life, drinking glasses are now in demand for their eco-friendly and sustainable production methods. A Berlin startup, Soulbottles, aims to revive the ion technology used in Superfest glasses to create high-quality, durable glassware that is also recyclable. The prototypes have proven to be incredibly strong, surviving drops from two meters.
