A recent study has revealed that buffalofish have an unexpectedly long lifespan, with some individuals living to be over 100 years old. This discovery overturns previous beliefs about the fish, which were thought to only live into their mid-20s. The study found that two species of buffalofish, the smallmouth buffalo and the black buffalo, can also live for more than a century. The longevity of these fish is particularly impressive considering that they are not native to the area they were studied in, with the population in Arizona having been introduced in 1918. Further research into the reasons for buffalofish longevity could provide insights into aging in vertebrates, including humans. Conservation of the species is also important, as their numbers are declining and harvest is currently unregulated.
