Starlink’s laser system is beaming 42 petabytes of data per day

SpaceX engineer Travis Brashears revealed that the laser system used by Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet constellation, delivers over 42 petabytes of data per day. This translates to 42 million gigabytes and is made possible through the use of 9,000 lasers passing over terabits per second of data. The laser system helps drive down latency, improves global coverage, and allows communication between satellites in Earth’s orbit. The system has a link uptime of over 99% and can maintain links for extended periods at transmission rates up to 200Gbps. SpaceX plans to expand the laser system for third-party satellites and explore beaming data directly to terminals on Earth’s surface.
