Strong evidence for new light isotope of nitrogen

A research team led by Robert Charity from Washington University in St. Louis has discovered a new light isotope of nitrogen, Nitrogen-9. This is the first known instance of a nucleus decaying by emitting five protons from its ground state. Nitrogen-9 is an ephemeral nuclide located on the proton-rich edge of the Chart of Nuclides. The experimental evidence for Nitrogen-9 was obtained from data collected at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This discovery serves as a test of the quantum mechanics of open or unbound many-body systems and contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms behind the creation of isotopes on Earth.
